The Click Test
If you hear nails clicking on hard floors, they’re too long — full stop. At correct length, nails hover just off the ground when the dog stands. Chronically long nails push the toes upward and back, straining joints and changing posture. On seniors with arthritis, overgrown nails make everything worse.
Finding the Quick
The quick is the blood-and-nerve core of the nail. On white nails it’s the visible pink; trim a few millimetres in front of it. On black nails, trim thin slices and watch the cut face: when a dark dot appears in the centre of a chalky ring, stop — the quick is next.
The Long-Nail Problem
Here’s the catch owners don’t expect: the quick grows with the nail. Nails neglected for months can’t be cut short in one session — you’d hit the quick immediately. The fix is frequent small trims (every 1–2 weeks) which coax the quick to recede. It’s a project of weeks, not one appointment.
Clippers vs Grinder
Clippers are fast; grinders (Dremels) remove tiny amounts with no crack risk and leave smooth edges — better for black nails and quick-shy dogs, if the dog tolerates the vibration. We use both at the salon depending on the dog.

Styptic powder, firm pressure, and forgiveness — for both of you. It stops quickly. End the session on a treat.
